Synology launches ActiveProtect hardware with a pure focus on backups

Under the name ActiveProtect, Synology is concentrating purely on backups for the first time. No DSM, no additional gadgets, everything is located in a compact web interface under the name ActiveProtect Manager.

At Computex, Synology is introducing ActiveProtect, a dedicated backup environment that focuses on protecting data in critical infrastructures. Key focus points for the brand: speed, ease of use and cost-effectiveness.

ActiveProtect allows you to quickly and scalably deploy additional backup storage space, both at the edge and in data centers. Everything is centrally managed through a web interface with a scalable operating system on the back. Load balancing is done automatically within the device network. According to Synology, configuring a new node takes no more than ten minutes.

Initially, ActiveProtect will start with one device: Synology DP7400. This 2U server has space for hard drives and has 140 TB of storage. The DP7400 is expected to be available in September. Later this year, Synology plans to expand this product range with a 1U hard drive server and a 2U all-flash server. Their stock quantities are not yet known. Each server is equipped with an AMD Epyc 7272 chip, 64 GB of RAM and two 10 Gigabit Ethernet ports.

You can rely on source-side deduplication via ActiveProtect across the entire device network to accelerate backups, reducing bandwidth usage across multiple backup servers. In total, you can deploy up to 2,500 servers and back up 150,000 endpoint devices and cloud accounts.

Synology ActiveProtect is compatible with Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace, Microsoft Hyper-V and VMware, Windows Server and Linux, Mac and Windows, Nutanix and NetApp, and supports SQL databases and Oracle.

ActiveProtect comes with a one-year license. You then pay a price that depends on how much storage space you use. Synology does not disclose the price, but says that their solution is up to 90 percent cheaper than the competition. We won’t find out whether that’s true and what price range they’re in until the launch in September.
