Snowflake follows up on last year’s announcements with a general availability celebration

Over the past year, Snowflake has reinvented itself as an AI specialist with numerous innovations. At this year’s Snowflake Summit, the company is celebrating the general availability of these innovations and the AI train will really reach cruising speed.

“Our innovations today are too numerous to go through them all,” said Christian Kleinerman (photo), EVP of Product at Snowflake, at the end of the keynote. Snowflake is indeed releasing a flood of updates and improvements to all of its products.

Even those who don’t feel like getting involved in something new can benefit from it. After all, the company is proud of constantly optimizing existing innovations and the average customer utilization would be twelve percent more efficient today than it was a year ago. In a cloud model where customers pay according to usage, that can count.

Everything generally available

Several announcements include new features like Cortex Search and Cortex Analyst, but this year Snowflake can also celebrate the general availability of many previous announcements.

“I’m very excited to announce that Snowflake Container Services is generally available today,” said an excited Kleinerman. Last year, Snowflake emerged as a container specialist with a preview of its brand new container platform, and today all customers can get started.

Several other innovations, including the collaboration with Nvidia, relate to Snowflake Container Services. Snowflake wants to bring all kinds of apps into the data and the general availability of container functionality is an important advantage for this.

Iceberg and Polaris

Apache Iceberg tables have been a major topic for Snowflake since Summit 2022. The open table model is intended to make data cloud specialists attractive to those who are allergic to vendor-specific formats and prefer openness.

This year, Kleinerman announced the general availability of Iceberg tables. “General availability is a major milestone,” said Ron Ortloff, head of data lake and Iceberg at Snowflake. “For all the data that’s already in Snowflake, the general availability of Iceberg tables will allow hundreds or two hundred times more data to land on the platform.”

This comes just in time for the next announcement: the Polaris catalog, which will take care of the Iceberg tables. Snowflake is obviously continuing to build on the open road it started in 2022.

MoreAI

Of course, AI also plays an important role. Last year, Snowflake proposed Document AI, and today this solution is generally available. “Document AI runs on our own Arctic Tilt model,” says Kleinerman. “It’s a relatively small model with less than a billion parameters, but it still delivers top results.”

Snowflake has announced its own copilot for SQL Bozos, which is now generally available. And then there is the Command line interface (CLI): Coming soon to be generally available, just like the Python API.

If you’re more excited about Universal Search, which lets you search everything in your entire Snowflake environment using natural language, after the last year, you’ll be happy with the immediate general availability.

Long list

The list goes on, but the innovations above are the most important and receive the most time in the spotlight. They illustrate an important step forward for Snowflake, which can check off innovations and focus on a new set of improvements.
