Synology launches C2 cameras that don’t require NAS

In addition to the specific C2 cameras, Synology is launching the FC600 camera with an extreme wide-angle lens to capture as much as possible. The new Synology BC800Z lets you zoom.

After launching its first two AI-powered cameras (BC500 and TC500) and an entry-level model (CC400W) last year, Synology is expanding its lineup with two new cameras.

The Synology FC600 has a 6 MP sensor that can capture a 360-degree image via an extreme wide-angle lens. The camera is only suitable for indoor use and offers two-way audio. IR LEDs next to the lens are designed to ensure a clear image in the dark.

The top model is the Synology BC800Z with an 8 MP sensor that can record in 4K. You can zoom the lens angle between 47 degrees and 110 degrees. The camera is suitable for outdoor use (IP67 certified) and works in outdoor temperatures from -30 °C to 60 °C. Thanks to a combination of white LEDs and IR LEDs, night vision of up to 30 meters is possible.

Both cameras will be available later this year. Synology will not announce a suggested retail price until closer to the release date. Eventually both cameras would also be released as C2 compatible cameras that do not require a NAS. More information on this can be found below.

Camera without NAS via C2

At Computex, Synology announced the C2 Surveillance Station for the first time. C2 Surveillance is already available today, where you can purchase cloud storage in addition to your NAS on which the video images are stored. The C2 Surveillance Station makes the NAS obsolete.

Later this year, Synology plans to launch new cameras that you can connect directly to the network and work with just the C2 cloud, with no NAS required. This will allow you to deploy a C2 compatible camera in minutes.

Since the AI functionality is in the camera thanks to integrated (limited) processing power, not everything needs to be sent to the C2 cloud. This allows you to save bandwidth when needed. For more privacy and security, you can also set up encryption on the camera side. You can manage all cameras via a web interface in C2.

Synology says that every C2 compatible camera comes with a free plan with AI detections so you can review recordings. Each camera includes an SD card from which you can view videos.

Do you use Synology C2 storage to review images next to detection zones? Today, C2 Surveillance costs between €9 and €200 per year per camera, depending on the storage duration and resolution of the camera. You can find more details on the rates here. Prices for Synology C2 cameras should not differ too much, but more clarity will be available later in the year.

The C2 cameras are variations on the existing lineup (BC500, TC500, and CC400W). They get a confusing new name, Synology CS500B, CS500T, and CS400CW, respectively. More information can be found here (PDF). The suggested retail price should not be significantly different from the non-C2 variants already available today. Synology will announce an exact suggested retail price later this year, closer to launch.
