Apple revives the Smart Glasses project

Apple can continue the smart glasses project under the code name Apple Glass. A new patent application hints at a hinge mechanism designed specifically for eyeglasses, potentially for rumored AR glasses. The news follows the launch of Apple’s Vision Pro, a high-tech product focused on augmented reality experiences. While Vision Pro offers a powerful AR solution, rumors point to Apple Glass aiming for a different approach.

“Two-axis hinge mechanism” allows the frames of the glasses to be folded in different ways

The patent describes a “bi-axial hinge mechanism” that allows eyeglass frames to be folded and opened in a variety of ways. This includes a wider-than-usual open position, which may benefit users with larger heads or increase durability when opening the glasses.

The design also prioritizes the protection of the electronic components of the windows in the folded or standard open position. Additionally, the hinge automatically locks into specific positions and applies an appropriate “compression force” to fit different head shapes.

Another interesting detail is that there is talk of cables running through the hinge, potentially to connect the speakers to headphones or other handheld components. This further reinforces the idea of a glasses-like form factor as opposed to a headband device like the Vision Pro.

It’s important to remember that patents do not guarantee that a product will see the light of day. But the filing offers a glimpse into Apple’s R&D and suggests they may be rethinking the concept of smart glasses with a focus on wearability and potentially a more streamlined design.
