Apple will probably introduce a new password manager during WWDC. The app can store not only passwords but also passkeys.

Apple has not yet officially launched the password manager app, but it will likely do so during WWDC on Monday, according to Bloomberg’s Apple analyst Mark Gurman. The app will have its original name Passwords We wonder how many meetings the marketing department had to hold to come up with this name.

Apple’s operating systems already have a password function built in, but it is well hidden in the settings. A renewed app is intended to make the integrated password management more visible in order to compete with third-party services: think of 1Password, Bitwarden and LastPass. Passwords are synchronized between different devices via the iCloud keychain.

Apple shows that it is moving with the times, because the Passwords app is not only used for passwords. It also lets you store your Passkeys, the natural successor to passwords, which is also supported by Apple. The Password Vault also has a place for your Wi-Fi passwords.

Further details are unknown. Apple will hold its annual WWDC conference on June 10, where it will unveil the full-featured iOS 18 and macOS 15. It is unknown whether passwords will be available retroactively for older iOS and macOS versions. AI promises to be a major topic during the conference.
