Better late than never and, Fortunately, when we talk about Recall, we can already apply this rule. If you haven’t heard about this controversy by now, less than two weeks ago Microsoft introduced the Memories feature as one of the star innovations of the new Copilot+ PC specification. As we have already told you, at first glance it appears to be a revolutionary and very interesting feature that could almost remind us of the “grain” that a large part of the population implanted in The Entire History of You, the third episode of the first season of Black Mirror.

Recall often takes screenshots of what is being done on the computer, then analyzes and indexes them using artificial intelligence and creates a database with this content. So if we later do a search from the prompt, the function will be able to find what we’re looking for. As a technology, without going into further implications, it is undeniable that we are facing a very interesting idea.

The problem is that we have to go to other consequences and of course Within hours, the first privacy and security concerns began to emergeand in less than a week an investigation was already open. And it all got worse when it turned out that the database was stored unencrypted and that the Recall feature was activated by default in Windows 11. Now we also knew (and told you) that Redmond was reconsidering the activation by mistake.

Fortunately, Microsoft is fixing this with Recall

We are only a few days away from the arrival of the first Copilot+ computer equipment on the market, but fortunately Redmond reacted in time and, as the company itself stated, Summons will not be enabled by default in Windows 11, in addition to other additional security measures. Microsoft acted, they say, in response to feedback they received in recent days, something that is indisputable at this point, but also saved itself a lot of potential problems.

So these are the three security announcements:

  • Appeal it will have to be activated by the userotherwise the function will remain inactive.
  • Access to timeline and appeal information will be protected Windows Hello.
  • All Recall content, images and databases, they will be stored encrypted.

Microsoft also emphasizes that Copilot+ computing devices have certain security features and tools that will be actively used with this feature. That, added to the fact that all its data is processed and stored locally, encourages you to trust Recall more and maybe give it a chance, even if it does severely limit what it can capture and what it can’t. They didn’t have a particularly long time to react to what had happened, but to their credit they knew how to react in time. Good for (and for) Microsoft on this occasion.
