The furniture giant Ikea has advertised a very original position: it is looking for employees for a branch in a virtual game. The employees receive a salary like in the real world.

Ikea will launch “The Co-Worker Game” in the virtual world of Roblox on June 24. The game lets people walk through a virtual Ikea store that looks just like the Swedish furniture giant’s physical stores. These are Ikea’s first steps into the mainstream gaming space, even if that’s not the most notable thing about the announcement.

Working in the Metaverse

Ikea is also looking for employees to operate a store in the metaverse. The employees will walk around the furniture store to help customers and – yes – serve virtual Swedish meatballs in the restaurant. Applicants can apply until June 16, but residency in the UK and Ireland is one of the main requirements.

It could be even crazier: Employees in the virtual store receive a salary. The hourly wage is up to £13.5, comparable to what an Ikea employee earns in London. Ikea is looking for ten employees to work in shifts, acquire additional skills and even be “transferred” to other stores. Ikea does not want to make a distinction between physical and virtual employees, the company said in a press release.

The metaverse is not new territory for Ikea: the company has previously also introduced virtual showrooms and applications that allow you to place a piece of furniture in your home before buying it. The company is therefore still a firm believer in the metaverse hype, while interest among the majority of the tech world seems to be waning more and more.
