Computers with processors based on the ARM architecture They are by no means new to the market. The most obvious references are of course those from Cupertino with their Apple Silicon chips, which were presented at WWDC 2020 and which debuted in the first systems at the end of the same year. But we can actually go back much further, to 1987, when the Acorn Archimedes, the first general-purpose PC with a 32-bit RISC ARM CPU, hit the market. In case you’re wondering, we’re talking about RISC OS here, the operating system that this computer used.

But no, this is not another of my “little battles” in the history of computing, now we are not looking to the past, but to the future. A future that currently has quite a positive outlook for Arm Holdings and technology companies that have chosen to use the ARM architecture in their embedded devices. The reason for such a positive outlook is, of course, the support that Qualcomm has given to this market with its Snapdragon laptops equipped with Qualcomm SoCs.

That’s right, yes At the moment we are talking about Qualcomm as a rival for AMD and Intel, but you may remember that just two weeks ago we told you that Michael Dell, the founder and CEO of the technology company Dell that gave his name, mentioned that NVIDIA was working on a chip for the PC market with AI. A move that is actually not particularly surprising. Rather, it fits quite well with the current state of the PC ecosystem and the growing interest in client-side AI.

As a result of these perspectives, as we read in TechPowerUp, Arm Holdings CEO Rene Haas says ARM architecture will overtake x86-64 in PC market by 2029. This claim is based on the fact that there are only two manufacturers that make x86 chips (AMD and Intel), compared to what it refers to as a vibrant ecosystem of SoC vendors. An ecosystem which, if we talk about PCs, is limited to Qualcomm for now, but in which NVIDIA has already “shown its paw” and which we will undoubtedly see new manufacturers in the future.

And that’s what makes Haas’s statements so interesting, because unlike ordinary mortals who can only speculate about it, You need to have a lot more information that allows you to make predictions in this regard.. How many potential chip suppliers have already contacted Arm Holding to evaluate integrated manufacturing? Perhaps the prospect of surpassing x86-64 in five years is too triumphant, but when the river sounds…
