With the Redmi 13, Xiaomi is launching a competitively priced budget phone that still has some superlatives in terms of technical data.
Xiami presents the Redmi 13. This is an absolute entry-level phone with an entry-level price of 179 euros including VAT. For this money you get the version with 6 GB RAM and 128 GB storage. A lightweight Mediatek Helio G91 SoC supplies the device with power.
When it comes to specifications, Xiaomi tries not to be too sparse. Despite the competitive price, the device has a 6.71-inch screen with 1,080 x 2,460 pixels and a 90 Hz refresh rate. At this price, you shouldn’t expect an OLED, but we don’t think the rest of the screen specs are bad.
The battery is also impressive with a capacity of 5,030 mAh. Combined with the lightweight hardware, this could theoretically mean a long lifespan. Xiaomi does not shy away from superlatives in its announcement and does not worry about whether they are justified, which leads to Professor Gobelijn scenarios. For example, the company talks about fast charging, but the charging power seems to be 33 watts, which still falls well below “slow” according to our definition.
For the camera, Xiaomi chooses a 108 MP Samsung sensor with pixel binning. Usually, high megapixels at a low price set off alarm bells for us: we have not yet seen the first good result. On paper, however, the Redmi 13 seems to be able to take adequate photos. On the front we find a 13 MP selfie camera.
We find it puzzling why there is a 2MP macro camera inside the body. Based on the specs, we can say with some certainty that this camera is going to be a crapshoot.
Xiaomi is swimming against the tide and equipping this budget device with a 3.5 mm jack. That’s nice, because the target group of this absolute entry-level model probably doesn’t plan on combining the device with expensive wireless headphones.
The Xiaomi Redmi 13 is a budget smartphone for those who don’t want to spend a lot of money on a phone. Expect little and you may be pleasantly surprised by the photo quality and battery life.
The Xiaomi Redmi 13 will soon be available for 179 euros for the entry-level version or 199 euros for the model with 8 GB RAM and 256 GB storage.
