WWDC 2024: Apple is catching up

It was at the end of March that Apple confirmed the dates of WWDC 2024, and of course since then there have been many of us watching the countdown to the start of the technology’s annual developer conference. And while many of us waiting aren’t developers, this year’s launch event was meant to be especially interesting for everyone those interested in artificial intelligence or more precisely upon his arrival in the Cupertino ecosystem.

Aside from a few signs that artificial intelligence will indeed feature heavily in this keynote, Apple hasn’t said a word about what they’ll tell us today, and as usual This did not prevent rumors and leaks that allowed us to make projectionsquite accurate in some cases, about today’s announcements, and to be even more precise about the expectations we might have with regards to AI-related announcements.

The keynote, recorded (it’s been a few years since Apple resigned to live events) started strongly, with the protagonists of the event led by the always “showman” (and I say this for the better, be careful, I think he has a great natural talent for these ” saraos”) Craig Federhigi, jump from a plane to Apple Park to the beat of the legendary Mötley Crüe’s Kickstart my Heart (with the added bonus that it starts playing on your iPod!). The descent of all is of course controlled by parachutes like the ones you can see in the picture that opens this publication. Of course it depends on the taste, but personally I loved this intro, pure rock and roll with a hint of nostalgia that got me in the mood right from the start.

Of course, that pace is not sustainable for the entire hour and forty minutes that this WWDC 2024 keynote lasted, neither for those who created and presented it, nor for the entire potential audience of the event, so after that “Great shot” (I hope it’s in the school sector), it’s time for Tim Cook to welcome us and with his help start the day’s announcements. And as expected, as is the custom in the house, things more or less went from less to more. I.e They saved the most important/expected for the end.

But don’t worry, I’m not going to copy this technique, because I’m sure you’re most interested in what they told us at WWDC 2024 in relation to artificial intelligence. Of course I can tell you that as we expected, there was an update today catch up (more or less) to the level of its main competitors. It was not for nothing that Federhigi described (very correctly) what we saw today as the beginning of the journey.

I believe at this point and under the circumstances Apple behaves quite reasonably. I have already mentioned on previous occasions that under any circumstances they did not react in time to respond quickly to their opponents, so trying to overtake them now was materially impossible. Instead, as we’ll see below, they’ve decided to take a lot of what already exists and yes, give it the “Apple touch”, something they’re experts at in Cupertino.

Apple Intelligence

We’ve been able to confirm, as we told you last Friday, that a set of AI-based features coming soon to the company’s ecosystem It’s called Apple Intelligence. It may seem (and in part it is, of course) a matter of branding, but it is true that without giving up the initial AI (artificial intelligence in English), they communicate from the first moment that it is not AI that we already know it is the vision they have for AI, and that’s important for both the brand and its users.

Yes, I said it will arrive soon, because the first news about it will debut, as we already expected, on iOS 18, iPad 18 and macOS 15 (which we will give you news about later, in this article), operating systems whose beta versions for developers will be available starting today, while the public ones will arrive sometime in July. The big question is whether all these features will be available from day one.

On the other hand, you’re probably wondering what devices the features introduced today will get, and in this regard, the news is better for current Mac and iPad Pro users than for iPad, iPad Air and iPhone devices, as the cutoff point is set by the SoC. Compatible chips are Apple A17 Pro, so only the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max will be able to enjoy them. And what about computers and tablets? Any chip from the Apple Silicon familysince its first generation (M1), the door to Apple Intelligence has been open.
