The upcoming major Windows 11 update is off to a false start. Microsoft even removed Windows 11 24H2 from the preview channel to refine some things.

Microsoft isn’t beating around the bush: “We are temporarily pausing the rollout of Windows 11, version 24H2, in the Release Preview Channel. “We will resume the rollout in the coming weeks,” Microsoft wrote in a short, dry update. Windows 11 24H2 has been available through the Insiders channel since May 22, but Microsoft is now hitting the pause button.

Problems, problems, problems

Microsoft did not give a reason, but a number of problems have been reported in recent weeks. This is not unusual for a beta update, but now the problems have turned out to be so significant that Microsoft wants to tinker with the update again behind the scenes.

Users have reported application crashes, performance degradation, and problems with VPNs, among other issues. The release on ARM is even being called “disastrous” by Reddit. ARM and Windows, it still seems to be a difficult marriage.

Then, of course, there was the fuss about Recall. Although this update is only available to a select group of Copilot Plus PCs, it sparked a lot of negative reactions. Security experts raised questions about privacy and security. Microsoft has already responded to this criticism by making Recall an opt-in feature.

Rollout in autumn

According to Microsoft’s plan, Windows 11 24H2 is scheduled to be released in the fall. Despite the false start, this schedule does not have to be at risk. Windows 11 24H2 is a feature update, which means that the update adds many new features to Windows:

  • Support for HDR background
  • Sudo for Windows
  • Rest in the Windows kernel
  • WiFi 7
  • AI-supported speech recognition
  • Scrollable quick settings view in the taskbar
  • 7-zip and TAR archives in Explorer
  • Better support for Low Energy Audio Bluetooth devices
  • Windows Copilot app
