US calls on Sheinbaum to ensure judicial reform that respects foreign investment

USA called on future Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaumto which judicial reform respect planned investments in the North American Free Trade Agreement (T-MEC).

This was stated by the head of the State Department for Latin America, Brian Nichols, during a hearing of the US House of Representatives committee on judicial reform proposed by outgoing President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador.

Nichols noted that Mexico is a “sovereign country” that it may change its legal framework when it considers it, but stressed that ” Transparency of the judicial system is vital” for investors both Mexicans and foreigners, especially from the USA and Canada.

“We will continue to insist, whatever the legal future in Mexico, that all T-MEC signatories respect the foreign investment protection provisions contained in the agreement.”

Asked about how to get Mexico’s next government to encourage the relocation of companies, known as nearshoring, Nichols emphasized that Sheinbaum is a scientist by profession and said she was confident that “an actual demonstration of the importance of this issue would be compelling to her.”

López Obrador wants judicial reform to be approved in September, when a new Congress with an overwhelming Morena vote is formed, which, among other things, seeks to ensure ministers Supreme Court are elected by popular vote.

Sheinbaum, who will take office Oct. 1, expressed support for the reform but called for a “broad discussion” on the issue involving bar associations, law schools and judges.
