More Android in ChromeOS should accelerate the rollout of Google AI features

ChromeOS gets an Android injection to bring more Google AI to Chromebrooks. To do this, the company is leveraging the Android Linux kernel and Android frameworks.

ChromeOS will soon be further developed on large parts of the Android stack, as can be read in a recent blog post from Chromium. Google wants to bring innovations, features and Google AI to users faster. The company will integrate the Android Linux kernel and the Android frameworks into ChromeOS. It is not yet clear when the improvements will be implemented.

Even more AI

These new improvements are primarily intended to bring even more AI to Chromebooks. Google recently announced that it will integrate Gemini (and even more AI) into Chromebook Plus.

Now, the company says it will adopt parts of the Android stack, such as the Android Linux kernel and Android frameworks, as part of the foundation of ChromeOS. By bringing this Android-based tech stack to ChromeOS, Google hopes to bring new AI features to users faster and at scale. Additionally, they will help “simplify engineering efforts” and “improve how different devices, such as phones and accessories, work together with Chromebooks,” Google said.

These announced improvements have started rolling out, but it will take some time before they are ready for consumers. Google promises a seamless transition to the updated experience once it is available.
