Flow Computing claims to improve CPU performance by a hundredfold

The startup Flow Computing claims that its proprietary PPU technology can increase the performance of any CPU by up to a hundredfold.

Finnish startup Flow Computing claims it can deliver 100x the performance of any CPU by offloading the work to a dedicated parallel processing unit (PPU) on or off-chip. The startup recently raised more than $4 million in funding and announced the new era of “CPU 2.0.” For a startup with only 3 employees, these statements are rather bold.

Finnish startup

Flow Computing’s technology PPU could increase the performance of any CPU by up to 100 times. You wouldn’t immediately expect such bold claims from a startup that was only founded in January of this year. This new startup is based at the VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland. The company is said to have already raised around 4.3 million US dollars in funding with just three employees.

“Super CPUs”

How would this PPU architecture work? According to Flow Computing, moving workloads to the PPU would usher in the era of new “super CPUs.” These chips would be fully backwards compatible with existing software and apps, and developers wouldn’t have to do anything to make these new PPU processors run 100x faster.

Flow Computing states that it doesn’t even have to be the best CPUs, but that all devices that have powerful CPUs would benefit from using PPU. Whether this actually comes to market remains to be seen. Flow Computing has shared a detailed whitepaper and FAQ with The Verge for those who might find the answer.
