This may sound like ancient history to you because years have passed. because Microsoft has implemented the migration of Minecraft accounts associated with Mojang. More precisely, the first notification in this regard occurred in October 2020. Of course, it is true that the announcement was not very popular in the community of users of the Java version of the game, so Microsoft took it in stride, and although they talked about a period of months to carry out the migration, a lot has passed over a year without further news.

February 2022 had to come for Microsoft to take it seriously this time and set a deadline, on March 10 of that year, when non-migrated accounts will be deleted. And what’s the problem, those people who don’t know Minecraft will ask? Well, the problem is that the game license is linked to the user account, so if it disappears, the user will lose the license he got when he bought the game.

However, it seems that Microsoft also quite calmly deleted the Mojang accounts that were not migrated to Microsoft accounts because, as we read in MSPowerUser, it is now Users are starting to see that their Mojang accounts for Minecraft have been deleted. It’s true, yes, in at least one example they show, a user has recently reported it, but that they’re doing so based on an email they received at the end of last year, but for whatever reason, haven’t been seen yet.

Microsoft will delete Minecraft accounts that haven't migrated from Mojang

Be that as it may, it raises an interesting debate as we have already seen positions for and against what happened.

Those who value it positively confirm this Microsoft gave an extremely long deadline (years) to do the migration, plus that all Minecraft Java users with Mojang accounts got the Bedrock version so they can enjoy both. And yes, it is indisputable that such long terms, which bear no loss and which, on the contrary, lead to improvement, are not common.

On the other hand, there are those who advocate DRM in games (and linking a license to use a game with a user account can be considered a digital rights management system) violates the freedom of the user, that just paying for usage should already provide unlimited access. The problem is that this model is very easy to use if we are talking about physical distribution, but it has become little less than a chimera if we are talking about digital distribution. It’s true, yes, stores like GOG allow us to download game binaries and don’t depend on user accounts to install and play. But even in this case, if we bought Cyberpunk 2077 for example, we will need a GOG user account to download the updates.
