Claudia Sheinbaum and Kamala Harris talk about drug trafficking, migration and the climate crisis

Claudia Sheinbaumfuture president of Mexico, and Kamala HarrisVice President of the United States, spoke this Thursday about immigration cooperation between both countries, the fight against drug trafficking and the importance of renewable energy sources.

Likewise, Harris congratulated Sheinbaum on “his historic election as Mexico’s new presidentin the elections on Sunday, June 2.

The White House said in a statement that the US vice president “reaffirmed the importance of maintaining close cooperation and friendly relations with Mexico“.

The two politicians spoke by phone about “deepening cooperation between the United States and Mexico to address the root causes of migration, strengthen commercial ties and economic growth, and combat human, drug and weapons trafficking” on their shared border.

Sheinbaum and Harris also called for “working together to combat climate crisis and promotion of renewable energy in the region”.

The first woman to win a presidential election in Mexico and the first woman to serve as vice president of the United States also emphasized the importance of empowering girls and involving women in leadership positions.

For her part, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo stated:

I thank Vice President of the United States Kamala Harris for calling me to congratulate me on our election victory. We share the fact that we were the first women elected to their respective positions.

The outgoing government of Andrés Manuel López Obrador has worked closely with the Joe Biden administration to stem migration flows that cross Mexico toward the United States.

In addition, Biden has tapped Harris to lead the search for private investment in Central American development to address the root causes of migration on the continent.

The United States believes Sheinbaum, a scientist by profession, is more open to promoting renewable energy than her predecessor Lopez Obrador, an outspoken fossil fuel advocate. (EFE)
