Asus is developing a range of HPC servers that are characterized primarily by efficiency. The company has also created a large AI model. However, its global ambitions remain limited for now.

Asus is slowly but surely trying to gain a place in the server market. The manufacturer is not known for servers, but rather for laptops, routers and components. However, Asus has already built up a good portfolio in its home country of Taiwan.

Energy efficient

For example, Asus was already involved in the construction of the Taiwania 2 supercomputer in 2018, which was ranked 20th in the top 500 at the time. Last year, Asus won the tender for Taiwania 4. According to The Register, Asus has already built a data center with a PUE (Power consumption efficiency) of 1.17. This is a very low PUE value, indicating that relatively little additional power is needed to cool the hardware: a great feat in Taiwan’s warm and humid climate.

In recent years, Asus has built up expertise in building (HPC) servers and data centers. The company also focused on AI and trained the Formosa model. This has 176 parameters and is trained on Chinese data instead of English.

Asus now has a range of servers that are popular with hyperscalers. The company’s smaller size makes it difficult to compete on price, but the manufacturer is finding its niche thanks to the energy efficiency of its hardware. The server market is a growth market for Asus, but it is not one that the company plans to focus on immediately. Currently, Asus is operating mainly under the radar, although there are ambitions to become a larger enterprise player in the long term.
