Former National Security Agency (NSA) chief Paul M. Nakasone is joining OpenAI’s board of directors. He will bring his cybersecurity expertise to the Security Committee.
Nakasone, a leading cybersecurity expert and head of the NSA, will join the OpenAI board. He will commit to thinking about how AI can be used to strengthen cybersecurity. OpenAI aims to demonstrate its commitment to security and highlight the importance of cybersecurity as the impact of AI technology continues to grow.
Nakasone, a retired U.S. Army general and former cybersecurity expert, will bring his expertise to the OpenAI Board. He joins the Board’s Security Committee, which makes recommendations to the full Board on critical security decisions for all OpenAI projects and operations.
The announcement continues: “Nakasone’s insights will contribute to OpenAI’s efforts to better understand how AI can be used to strengthen cybersecurity by quickly detecting and responding to cybersecurity threats.” The company believes this can bring significant benefits to various institutions that are frequently targeted by cyberattacks, such as hospitals, schools or financial institutions.
Nakasone joins OpenAI’s board, which currently includes Sam Altman, Adam D’Angelo, Larry Summers, Bret Taylor, Dr. Sue Desmond-Hellmann, Nicole Seligman and Fidji Simo. Dee Templeton of Microsoft has a non-voting observer seat.
Recently, one of the former board members spoke about the situation with Altman’s dismissal in an interview on the podcast “The TED AI Show”.
