Samsung is launching a limited edition of Shortcut smart sneakers that let you control your smartphone using a variety of dance moves. A total of six pairs will be released, and they will be raffled off among Samsung gadget buyers until July 9.
Special sensors are embedded in the soles of shortcut sneakers that recognize five unique foot movements. Every movement triggers a specific command on the Samsung smartphone. For example, you can call a friend by lacing your heels together, like Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz. Users can also perform other dance moves such as the “moonwalk” for calls. Commands to play music, turn on the camera, and open other programs are also available, according to HotHardware. Over time, the gesture recognition algorithm will learn itself and become more accurate.
However, at this time, only six pairs of these unique sneakers will be released. At most, there will be a draw in a competition open only to customers of Samsung’s Dutch division via a dedicated app until July 9, 2024.
This unusual gadget is another attempt by Samsung to expand the wearable device market. Let us remind you that the company previously announced the Galaxy Ring smart ring, which monitors the user’s activities and health. It is not yet known whether Shortcut sneakers will reach a wider audience in the future, but the interest in them may push Samsung into larger production.
The shortcut sneakers are produced by Samsung in collaboration with Elitac Wearables, Brut Amsterdam, Cheil Benelux and sneaker designer Roel van Hoff. At this point, it’s unclear whether these unique sneakers will reach the global market, but if the Shortcut Sneakers gain enough traction, Samsung may answer the call (perhaps by pivoting).
