Windows Recall will not be available immediately on Copilot Plus PCs. Microsoft will initially allow the much-discussed feature to run via the Insider channel.
When the first batch of Copilot Plus PCs arrives on June 18, it will initially be without a recall. Microsoft says it will send the feature to the Windows Insider channel first, like almost every new Windows feature. It’s a new addition from Microsoft to the criticism that Recall has faced.
Windows Recall had to be one of the features that demonstrated the added value of the Copilot Plus label. The feature creates a screen recording every three to five seconds and saves it locally on your device. With Recall, you can go back months in time on your PC.
Things turned out differently for Microsoft. Security and privacy experts didn’t like Recall. In addition to the fact that everything you do on your PC is recorded, experts said the security is not completely watertight. Microsoft emphasizes that snapshots are not sent to the cloud and users decide for themselves whether they want to use Recall or not.
Microsoft also previously chose to make Recall an optional feature that requires users to explicitly opt in to. Now it’s making another concession by not rolling out Recall immediately. The feature will first appear in a closed preview for Windows Insiders. Recall will have to follow the same path as any new Windows feature.
A postponement is certainly not an adjustment for Recall. Microsoft still plans to roll out the feature. The recall will be an exclusive feature for authorized Copilot Plus PCs.
