Another Tesla collided with an ambulance

Tesla’s self-driving features have been a major selling point for Elon Musk’s electric cars, but as owners increasingly rely on these features, we’re learning just how flawed they are. Police in Fullerton, California, said a self-driving Tesla collided with a police car this week while officers were at the scene of an unrelated collision. If this sounds familiar, it’s because Teslas have a bad reputation for crashing into parked ambulances.

On June 13, a police cruiser was parked at the intersection of Orangethorpe and Courtney Streets in Fullerton after responding to a fatal crash. While the police were closing the accident scene to traffic, the vehicle in question was blocking the road. Shortly after midnight, a Tesla Model S crashed into a cruiser that appeared to have no braking. The officer was able to escape in time and the driver of the Tesla was not seriously injured.

The police car was parked with its hazard lights on, according to the report. Police also placed numerous warning signs on the road to warn drivers of the danger. The owner of the Tesla admitted that the vehicle was in “self-driving mode” and that they were distracted by their phones at the time of the crash. You can see the accident in the Instagram post below.

Tesla’s autonomous driving features have previously been criticized for not being able to see emergency vehicles. This is somewhat surprising, considering how much Tesla relies on cameras rather than radar and lidar, which are key to other unmanned platforms. But all those flashing lights apparently aren’t registered by the car’s computer vision system. And this is despite numerous system updates that Tesla claims will eliminate this failure mode.

An ongoing federal investigation is allegedly investigating Tesla for securities and wire fraud for the way it resells its Autopilot and Fully Self-Driving features. CEO Elon Musk has made many big promises about these technologies, claiming that cars will be able to easily navigate complex streets. The company even created a mock autonomous driving trailer in which the car travels a pre-planned route on a 3D map. He even claimed that Fully Self-Driving would allow Tesla to operate as a robot taxi to earn money while you sleep.

This incident is reminiscent of another recent Tesla accident in which a Tesla attempted to crash into a train. A similar situation – a solid barrier (train) with flashing lights (intersection) was not enough for the car to understand that it was approaching an obstacle. In this latest case, the Tesla driver is reportedly cooperating with police. The investigation is ongoing, but the driver is expected to be fined for not paying attention to his vehicle.
