Spam calls are a constant nuisance and scam calls have become a big problem for many phone users. While the Google Phone app already offers some caller ID features, Google has now added a new “Call” button to make identifying unknown callers even easier.
Now, when you encounter an unknown number, you must decide whether to answer it or risk missing a legitimate call. If you choose not to answer, you can manually copy the number to Google or phonebooks like Truecaller to see if any information comes back.
This problem will soon disappear with the search function in Google phone dialer. Now when you receive a call from an unknown number, just click the Call button in the Phone app. This will launch the app to automatically find the number information without having to switch to another app or manually copy and paste.
Search results may vary depending on number activity. Ideally, a scam search should reveal the type of fraud. This confirmation can help you decide whether to respond and if it’s a scam, you can report the number.
Even if the search button doesn’t provide definitive answers, it can still be useful. If the caller is legitimate and you don’t answer the call, they may leave a voicemail for you to listen to later. For less important calls, they can also respond via text message.
The search feature was first announced with the June feature launch for Pixel devices. But according to Android Police, the update now appears to be distributed independently. This means it may not be immediately available on all devices, even if they have received the Pixel update.
The good news is that the Search button does not appear to require any user activation. It just needs to appear in the Phone app at some point during the current rollout. So, stay tuned for the new feature and benefit from the extra information it provides when dealing with unknown callers.
