Meta halts its AI plans for Europe after several complaints from users and European data protection organizations.

Meta recently informed its users that it will soon be using data from European users to train its AI systems. With its social media platforms like Instagram and Facebook, the company has a goldmine of data and says it has a “legitimate interest” in using it.

This announcement led to many complaints from consumers, but European privacy organizations also disagree. An appeal by privacy organization NOYB to data protection authorities in several countries, including Belgium, led to the pause of Meta’s AI plans in Europe.

Although users can submit a hard-to-find appeal form before June 26, it lacks the explicit permission that Meta had to first obtain from users.

Headwind

Facebook and Instagram users recently received a notification from Meta stating that all public photos and posts can be used to train AI applications, provided you object before June 26. Meta explicitly includes these AI developments in its privacy policy and is therefore obligated to inform users.

This announcement was met with fierce resistance from consumers and privacy organizations because users were never explicitly asked for their consent. As a result of the flood of complaints, Meta is pausing its AI plans in Europe.

Treasure chest full of data

Meta, owner of Facebook and Instagram, has a lot of free data from its social media platforms and wants to use it to train its AI models. Meta says it has a “legitimate interest” in using this data.

“Simply put, without incorporating local information, we would only be offering people a second-class experience. This means we cannot launch Meta AI in Europe at this time,” said Meta.

It is not yet clear if and when Meta will resume its AI plans in Europe. Anyone who still wants to protect their data can submit the objection form by June 26. This form can be found on Facebook at Settings and privacybelow Privacy Policy. In the text you will find the note “Right of objection”. As soon as you click on it, you will be taken to the form.

For Instagram, click on the three horizontal lines at the top right and then on The information. You can then navigate to Privacy Policy and submit the objection form.
