Archaeologists from the Spanish University of Córdoba discovered the world’s oldest wine, which has survived to this day in liquid form, during their work in the largest ancient Roman necropolis on the Iberian Peninsula. Its age is estimated to be approximately two thousand years.

According to an article by Spanish researchers published in a scientific publication Journal of Archaeological Science: ReportsIn one of the graves, archaeologists found a lead box containing a glass container with red liquid.

Scientists conducted a chemical analysis of the find and found that the composition of the liquid contained polyphenols and a profile of mineral salts typical of ancient Roman wines. It is interesting that in ancient times wine was white, but as a result of chemical processes that took place over two thousand years, it acquired a red color.
