SpaceX launched another batch of its Starlink broadband satellites from California on Tuesday, June 18, ending the company’s 10-day spaceflight drought.

A Falcon 9 rocket carrying 20 Starlink spacecraft, 13 of which have direct communications capability, lifted off from Vandenberg Space Force Base on Tuesday at 11:40 pm ET (8:40 pm California time; 12:40 pm GMT, June 19).

Approximately 8.5 minutes later, the first stage of the Falcon 9 touched down with the SpaceX Of Course I Still Love You drone parked in the Pacific Ocean. Meanwhile, the Falcon 9 upper stage continued to carry 20 satellites into low Earth orbit, where they were deployed approximately an hour after liftoff. The new group will add more than 6,000 active satellites to the Starlink megaconstellation.

Tuesday night’s mission was SpaceX’s 61st orbital launch of the year, but its first since June 8. This isn’t a recession for any operator except SpaceX, which is launching an average of one every 2.8 days in 2024.

The Starlink launch would be the second half of SpaceX’s double spaceflight on Tuesday. But the first phase, the launch of the Astra 1P telecommunications satellite for Luxembourg-based SES, was canceled due to strong winds near the launch site, the Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida.
