This was announced by Candida Maradiaga, coordinator of the Children’s Ombudsman of the National Commissioner for Human Rights in Honduras (Conada). According to the Network of Children’s Rights Institutions (Coiproden), cited by Maradiaga, In 2022, 569 children and young people died violently in Honduras, 713 in 2023, and 274 in the first five months of 2024.

Escalation of violence

The number of children and young people killed in Honduras is “seriously alarming” and has led to the country becoming a “dangerous space” for this population– the expert emphasized.

“We are at a critical moment because (violent) cases are escalating, we don’t see any slowdown.”said Maradiaga, declaring that the Secretariat for Children, Adolescents and Families (Senaf) of Honduras faces a “huge challenge” in the face violence that has increased in recent years.

Senaf must promote a national policy with a comprehensive approach to “counteracting high levels of violence,” the expert added, making sure that Girls, boys and young people are among the most vulnerable due to the criminal violence plaguing the country.

Children and young people ‘deserve to be a priority’ on the government’s agenda and distributing the national budget so that they can “grow and live with dignity,” Vázquez emphasized.
