The measure was signed into law this Wednesday by Louisiana’s governor. Republican Jeff Landry following its approval in May in the Conservative-dominated Legislature.

The new law (HB-71) requires that the text of the Ten Commandments print on a poster measuring at least 27 by 35 centimeters. and is visible in the classrooms.

The law “requires a specific version of the Ten Commandments,” stating that deviation from this “would violate state law”.

Republican Dodie Horton, who promoted the project, emphasizes that The Commandments are “the basis of all Louisiana laws.” and Democrats who voted against it consider it unconstitutional.

These efforts began after the 2022 U.S. Supreme Court ruling in Kennedy v. Bremerton School District (Washington), proposing a more flexible interpretation of the constitutional order that prevents government support for religion.

United States orders “separation of church and state” noting that “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.”

Civil rights organizations such as the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), Americans United for Separation of Church and State, and the Southern Poverty Law Center. They said they plan to challenge the measure.
