Two new Samsung storage solutions have been registered with Korea’s official intellectual property service. Of particular interest is the Samsung SSD 9100 PRO, which is supposed to be the company’s debut on the PCIe 5.0 interfacefastest available.

Samsung leads the sales of SSD drives, but like other big storage brands (see WD, Kioxia or Kingston) it has not launched a solution for the Gen5 interface. The reasons are varied and can range from removing Gen4 (PCIe 4.0) inventory to solving a problematic temperature rise that forced the production of high-profile coolers. Be that as it may, it’s quite strange that the storage giants haven’t released specific drives for the latest generation.

It seems that the Samsung SSD 9100 PRO will turn the tables even from the new nomenclature that could accurately define this type of product with full support and performance of Gen5, respectively data transfer up to 14 Gbytes per second when reading and writing sequential, which is twice what Samsung’s fastest SSD to date, the SSD 990 Pro, achieved.

The brands page doesn’t list specific specs, but Samsung always uses its own components for its drives, we expect a drive in M.2 2280 format with support for the NVMe protocol, NAND flash memory of the ninth generation of the V-NAND series and a controller created specifically for extracting the potential of the interface. We expect it to be launched in storage capacities of 1, 2 and 4 Tbytes.

Samsung has also registered a second SSD model «990 EVO Plus». We also don’t know its specs, but it must be an upgrade from the current 990 EVO, a unit that the firm marketed as “Gen5 compatible” but which didn’t offer full interface support and in fact only clocked speeds of 5000 / 4200MB/s read/ registration.

Like the Samsung SSD 9100 PRO, it will support 256-bit AES and TCG/Opal encryption and will include free Samsung Magician software for disk management, various parameter information and firmware update. We don’t know the release date or the price. We have already updated the official information.
