Lenovo unveils its ThinkSystem v4 lineup based on Intel’s Xeon 6 processors. Not surprisingly, the portfolio announcement is peppered with references to AI.

Lenovo is launching ThinkSystem v4: a series of servers equipped with Intel Xeon 6 processors. The server specialist explains some of the features of the new portfolio. For example, Lenovo is focusing on higher density in its servers. With the Xeon 6 CPUs, the core density per rack is increased by a factor of four. According to Lenovo, customers can pack up to 4.3 times more horsepower into a single rack.

According to Lenovo, the Lenovo ThinkSystem SD520 V4 can be configured with 576 cores in a 2U chassis, while the predecessor SD530 V3 had a limit of 256 cores. This server is optimized for high throughput or cloud-native workloads. According to the manufacturer, the Lenovo ThinkSystem SR630 V4 is optimized for media transcoding.

Neptune

Lenovo offers classic air-cooled servers in the new series, but is also expanding the portfolio to include liquid cooling using its own Neptune technology. This can drastically reduce the overall energy consumption of powerful HPC servers. Finally, the ThinkSystem v4 series is available with both CPU and GPU acceleration for AI workloads.

Lenovo has repeatedly pointed out the AI ​​capabilities of the devices and Intel’s marketing department will probably have to catch up. With the Xeon 6 processors, the focus is heavily on the built-in inference capabilities in order to differentiate the chips positively from AMD’s Epyc processors. How relevant this actually is depends on the intended workloads. Because contrary to what the manufacturers would like to make you believe, the whole world has not suddenly become AI.
