Anthropic launches Claude 3.5 Sonnet, a new AI model designed to more quickly and efficiently generate responses to prompts related to reasoning, knowledge, and coding.

OpenAI competitor Anthropic today introduced Claude 3.5 Sonnet. Sonnet is the first model in the new Claude 3.5 family and is in the middle of the product range. Haiku will be the smaller version, Opus the larger one.

Faster and more efficient

Claude 3.5 Sonnet offers twice the speed of its predecessor Claude 3 Opus. It would also outperform other models such as GPT-4o and Gemini 1.5. According to Anthropic, Claude 3.5 Sonnet has advanced skills in nuance, humor, and complex instructions. The LLM is said to excel in advanced thinking, knowledge, and coding.

In March, Anthropic released Claude 3. This model was designed to outperform the best LLMs from OpenAI and Google, but was quickly overtaken by GPT-4o, among others. Claude 3.5 must once again take the lead.

Better eyes

The model has better eyesight than its predecessor. Claude 3.5 Sonnet can process complex visual inputs and interpret graphics, for example. It is also possible to extract text from images that are not perfectly legible. According to Anthropic, this makes the model relevant for the retail or logistics industry, for example.

Anthropic emphasizes its commitment to security and privacy. Claude 3.5 Sonnet has undergone extensive security testing and adheres to strict privacy policies.

Place of cooperation

Along with the new LLM, Anthropic is also launching Artifacts, a dynamic workspace for real-time interaction with AI-generated content. On one side of the workspace, you communicate with Claude, and on the other side, you see the generated content like code. Anthropic wants to make Claude a collaboration platform, and this new workspace fits that goal.

The new model is available through Claude.ai, the Claude iOS app, and various APIs such as Amazon Bedrock and Google Cloud’s Vertex AI. Using the model costs three dollars per million input tokens and fifteen dollars per million output tokens, with a context window of 200,000 tokens.

Future releases within the Claude 3.5 family, such as Claude 3.5 Haiku and Claude 3.5 Opus, are planned for later this year.
