After many years (actually its entire history) with a single subscription level, Spotify has been making some changes lately And if the rumors and leaks are finally confirmed this time, everything indicates that there will be more news in this regard before the end of the year. Of course, and this will be abundantly clear to those who read me often, I’m not putting my hand in the fire for this, but when the time comes, I’ll be happy to admit that I could have been a little more optimistic.
All these moves start in September 2022, when Spotify starts offering access to audiobooks, but does not include them in the premium subscription, but must be purchased separately. However, a little more than a year later, the dean of streaming makes a very interesting change in this regard, namely the inclusion of audiobooks in the premium subscription, but with a maximum of 15 hours of listening per month. Of course, this feature has only made its way to a few markets at this point, including the United States.
Another move happened in March of this year when Spotify started offering (also only in the United States) a specific audiobook subscription for $9.99 per month, and just a few weeks ago (we’re still talking about the US) there was a price increase for the premium subscription, which from $10.99 to $11.99. This makes its price on the other side of the pond one euro more expensive than that of its nemesis, Apple Music.
However, it seems that this change may not have pleased its users too much because, as we read in TechCrunch, now Spotify has created a new subscription level, called “Basic”and that for 10.99 euros the monthly magazine offers access to the entire music catalog, but not for 15 hours of audiobooks per month. So that’s what the premium plan always included until audiobook access was added with the previously mentioned hour limit.
All this, of course, against the background of the Hi-Fi quality plan, allegedly called Supremium, which again aims to debut by the end of the year (as happened last year) and which will also include more monthly hours of audiobook access. and which is expected to cost between $16.99 and $18.99 per month, according to sources.
I still have my doubts, as I expressed a few days ago, both with the launch of Supremium and the interest users may have in the $10.99/euro/month basic plan when withOur main rivals offer plans for the same price but with Hi-Fi quality music and, at least in the case of Apple Music and Prime Music, also surround sound, which has not yet been mentioned in the leaks about Spotify’s plans.
