Apple’s new flagship products will not enter the European Union

I’m still trying to understand whether Apple’s latest is a serious warning, a brag, or a sounding balloon, but I have no doubt that this is a monumental lack of respect for its users in the European Union. And as those from Cupertino told the Financial Times, Some of the major features introduced at WWDC 2024 won’t make it to the European Union due to Apple’s DMA concerns.

Apple’s problems with the Common European Area Digital Markets Act are nothing new, and we’ve seen somewhat embarrassing performances in this regard in the past. But let’s do a little history. It all started last September, although it has been seen before, when a list of six gatekeepers, six major technology companies, whose products and services should be subject to special antitrust regulations, was published.

Apple, like other disabled people, they legitimately tried to get around those rules, though sometimes with arguments as contentious as the one they used with their Safari browser. It didn’t turn out well, like what happened with iPadOS, but again, it’s legit. Not so much, however, was the threat of removing compatibility with Web Progressive Applications (WPA), which didn’t sit too well with European regulators, which in turn caused them to withdraw in Cupertino. Small needles that I understand are still stuck to this day.

Apple's new flagship products will not enter the European Union

So they seem to have decided that the best way to get it back to European regulators is to report it Apple Intelligence, iPhone Mirroring and SharePlay Screen Sharing will not arrive in the European Union with the debut of the operating systems announced during WWDC 2024. This is the exact quote we can read in the FT:

“”Due to the regulatory uncertainty caused by the Digital Markets Act, we do not believe we will be able to implement three of these [nuevas] Features: iPhone Mirroring, SharePlay screen sharing improvements and Apple Intelligence. to our EU users this year

It is clear that adapting to the different regulatory frameworks that exist in the world is a complex task, but Apple could have started this adaptation from the first moments of the development of these functions, in order to achieve in this way September with fully adapted DMAs. Instead, however prefers to keep its users in the European Unionwhom he also tried to punish with the sad DMA episode he mentioned earlier.

That’s what bothers me the most about all of this We’re talking about the same Apple that responds with the speed of light to far more dubious demands, such as those imposed by the Chinese government.. Well done Apple, as a user for many, many years this makes me very sad, but I fully appreciate the importance you place on me as a user in the European Union. And you can be crystal clear that I will act accordingly.
