American nuclear-powered aircraft carrier arrives in South Korea for maneuvers

American aircraft carrier The nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt arrived at the port of Busan on Saturday.southeast of South Korea, in a show of force following a summit between Moscow and Pyongyang this week.

Aircraft carrier went to the naval base in Busan, 320 kilometers from Seoul, early Saturday morning, along with the destroyer USS Halsey, it is equipped with a 7,600-ton Aegis vessel, according to the South Korean Navy.

Yesterday is first arrival of a US aircraft carrier in South Korea in seven months since the visit of the USS Carl Vinson in November, as well as the first stop in Busan by the USS Theodore Roosevelt, which participated in trilateral naval exercises between South Korea, the United States and Japan in April.

Arrival takes place days before the three countries hold their first trilateral interdisciplinary exercise later this month, known as Freedom Edge, and amid efforts to strengthen security cooperation against possible threats from North Korea.

The United States and South Korea have already conducted similar exercises called Shield of Freedom, in which they will now also seek to involve Japan.

The carrier’s arrival comes after North Korea’s leader this week Kim Jong-un and Russian President Vladimir Putin held a summit in the North Korean capital, which marked the first visit by a Moscow president to the sealed country in more than 24 years.

In this context they signed “Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Agreement” which replaces the bilateral agreements hitherto sealed by Moscow and Pyongyang, which require both sides not to sign pacts with third countries that infringe on the fundamental interests of the other side, and not to engage in such actions.
