Everything that begins has an end and Google Podcasts is no exception. In this case, yes, at least we can say that it doesn’t surprise us at all since the search engine technology company started pointing this out in September of last year. And the reason why, as they already told us and we told you at the time, is nothing more than the transfer of this type of content to YouTube Music, and therefore the concentration of music and podcasts, as other services like Spotify used to do.

The shutdown of the service did not happen worldwide at the same time, because as of April 2nd it is no longer available in the United States, although it is true that at that time the necessary features for transferring Google Podcasts subscriptions to other services were not yet released in the rest of the world, because outside of YouTube Music or any other third-party service . Fortunately, they didn’t keep us waiting long, because they were already allowed at the end of the same month.

Although YouTube Music has some limitations that could degrade the podcast listening experience compared to what Google Podcasts offers, especially for users with free accounts, the tech company is aware of this and in response removed the main limitation in this respect. So when you play podcasts on YouTube Music, even if you don’t have a premium account, you can download them to listen to them offline and also play them with the app in the background as well as with your smartphone locked.

Now, even though these tools and features have been available for a while, it’s still possible to use both services, but that’s at the end, why? Because today is the last day of Google Podcasts. As mentioned when opening the app (you can see it in the image above this paragraph), from tomorrow the service will no longer work, so if you are still using it and haven’t done so yet, now is the perfect time for you to migrate or export your subscription to another platform according to your selection.

The urgency, yes, is mainly so that you can continue listening from tomorrow because Google it still provides an additional period to complete the migration process with the features they have enabled for this purpose, a period that lasts until July 29, 2024, as we can read on the support page. It also means that all of our Google Podcasts data will remain available in Google Data Export for at least one year.
