We first heard about the closure of Google Podcasts in September of last year, an app that would join the list of services, devices and platforms that Google has decided to shut down. The list of tools that Google has shut down is so long that websites like ‘Killed by Google’ have sprung up to keep track of all the tools that Google has shut down.
At the beginning of last April, the news was confirmed and Google Podcasts closed its doors in the United States. Just a few weeks later we learned of the planned closure date for the rest of the world, which was June 24th. The day has finally come and Google Podcasts has stopped serving users of the app.
You can’t continue using Google Podcasts, but you can export your subscription list
If you are a Google Podcasts user, you will see that when you access the Google app it shows us a notification telling us it is after June 23, 2024. It will not be possible to listen podcasts from the application. The company suggests we start using YouTube Music, a version of the popular video platform created just for music.
Since Google Podcasts is officially closed and no longer available, it is necessary to look for an alternative. Although Google recommends us to use YouTube Music, we have many quality alternatives on the market worth considering. Of course, before looking for a replacement we will need to: export podcasts we subscribe to.
This is something we can easily do by opening the app and pressing the ” button.Export subscriptionsIt appears in the notification displayed by Google at the top of the app (within the “Home” section). We can then choose between two different options: import our subscription list to YouTube Music or download an OPML file to import it into another application.
Of course, it’s important to make sure we export our subscriptions. before next July 29because after this date passes there will be no way to move our subscriptions to alternative services.
Fortunately, there are many alternative applications available
In addition to being able to listen podcasts We can find many quality applications on Google Play on platforms such as YouTube Music or Spotify. Of course, there are alternatives for every taste, and we have already mentioned the most recommended ones.
Personally, I prefer Pocket Casts, which we have already told you about in detail, is a cross-platform application available for free on Google Play. The app has a subscription payment option that offers access to additional features (such as the ability to use folders and bookmarks or use the web and computer version), but the free version is the most complete.
If you want to try it, you can transfer your subscription list. Simply from Google Podcasts. To do this, simply open Pocket Casts, click on the “Profile” button in the lower right corner of the interface, and access the application settings by tapping on the settings gear icon that appears in the upper right corner. Finally “enter”Import and export OPML” and select “Select file” in the “Import subscriptions” section.
