OpenAI makes its first acquisition with the purchase of Rockset: a startup focused on data management and analytics for enterprises.

OpenAI completed its first acquisition last week. The GPT specialist is buying the start-up Rockset. Rockset specializes in enterprise-level data and has developed a real-time analytics database that includes powerful indexing and query capabilities, according to OpenAI.

Rockset enables users to better integrate their own data into AI applications. OpenAI wants to integrate the startup’s technology into its own products, particularly to strengthen its data query infrastructure.

Focus on your own data

In other words, OpenAI wants to use Rockset’s expertise to build a bridge between its own models and customer data. For example, ChatGPT will give users access to analytics and answers based on their own data. This is already possible, for example by providing data in a prompt, but OpenAI is apparently hoping to make progress in this area.

Several members of the Rockset team will make the transition to OpenAI. In the short term, Rockset customers will not see an immediate change, but in the long term there does not seem to be any intention to continue the startup’s activities. OpenAI is primarily interested in the team and expertise and has paid an undisclosed amount for it.
