Luis Arce appointed new army commanders

President of Bolivia, Luis Arce, appointed at the executive headquarters new commanders of the Bolivian army in the midst of a military movement that he called a “coup d’etat” Juan José Zúñiga, who until today was the general commander.

At the forefront of this coup attempt is the army commander Juan Jose Zuniga fired in the final hours following press announcements this week that the Armed Forces would act to prevent former President Evo Morales from running in the elections.

Zúñiga said a new cabinet would be formed “soon.” “Ministers will be changed, our state cannot continue in the same spirit, doing whatever it wants. “We are showing our dissatisfaction,” he said.

“For your Armed Forces, it is a duty, a responsibility to take back this homeland, stop impoverishing the homeland and humiliating the army,” said Zúñiga, who assured that “for now” he recognizes the authority of President Arce.

Zúñiga assured that he has the support of the highest command of the Armed Forces.

“It cannot be that the loyalty of the commanders is paid for with disloyalty,” he said, clarifying that they are not confronting the people, the Bolivian newspaper Los Tiempos reports.

Arce calls on citizens to defend democracy

In a message to the country, President Luis Arce condemned the coup attempt and called on citizens to speak out and defend democracy.

“The country today is faced with an attempted coup, today the country is again faced with interests so that democracy in Bolivia is shrinking,” he said.

“We need people Bolivia“Do not organize or mobilize against the coup d’etat for democracy,” he added.

According to published videos, heavily armed soldiers and armored vehicles were seen arriving at the central Murillo square in La Paz. (EFE and Reuters)
