Plus subscribers recently got a taste of the ChatGPT app on macOS. Now OpenAI is rolling out the app to all macOS users. Previously, the app found its way to Android and iOS, and now macOS joins that list. Users can now access OpenAI’s language models directly without having to open the web browser.
Until now, ChatGPT users without a Plus subscription with a Macbook could only consult the AI chatbot via the browser. OpenAI announced at X that the ChatGPT app is now available to all users. This allows you to ask questions to the AI bot directly from the app without having to open a web browser.
In the app, you can choose from the various OpenAI language models such as GPT-3.5, GPT-4, GPT-4o and DALL-E 3. With the latter, you can generate images; files are also supported. You can easily upload a PDF document and have it summarized using the app.
The app on macOS still has some shortcomings that OpenAI says it is looking for a solution for. For example, GPT-4o’s extended language mode does not work and the app does not yet support the official API and related features.
The ChatGPT app can be downloaded from the OpenAI website, but not yet from the Mac App Store. In addition, Mac laptops and PCs must be running at least macOS Sonoma or later and have an Apple M1 processor.
