Demand for the Suzuki Jimny is so strong this year that the stretched five-door Jimny XL has further increased sales since the beginning of this year, while the Japanese brand continues to develop more versions of the popular compact SUV.

Aside from an electric version of the Jimny expected by 2030 (one of five new Suzuki battery electric vehicles likely to be launched by the end of the decade) and a hybrid version due earlier, Suzuki is still considering a pickup truck and a new SUV. Global market, probably called Mighty Boy.

“Everything that starts with a Jimny ends with sales,” said Suzuki Australia general manager of cars Michael Paciota at the recent launch of the new Suzuki Swift. When asked about the long-awaited Jimny-based two-door pickup, Paciota said: “I would say the project is not dead. Imagine a Jimny with two seats in the front and an empty seat in the back.”

Suzuki’s local chief also expressed his enthusiasm for more efficient versions of the Jimny, which will reduce CO2 emissions in the brand’s fleet under the federal government’s new Vehicle Efficiency Standard (NVES), which will be implemented from 2025. “I would like to see other options for the Jimny product, possibly even options that could help with NVES,” Pachota said.

Speculations regarding the pick-up version of the fourth-generation Suzuki Jimny gained new momentum with the introduction of the Jimny Pick-Up Style Concept at the 2019 Tokyo Auto Show.

Jimny sales are up more than 50 per cent in 2024, making it Suzuki Australia’s best-selling model and the second most popular model in the small SUV segment behind the Mazda CX-3.
