After difficult years, things are looking good again for PC farmers: Sales of new PCs are growing by five percent. The forecasts for 2025 are even better.

Canalys sees positive prospects for the PC industry. After a strong first quarter in which the number of shipments rose by five percent, the analysis agency assumes that a positive growth trend has settled in again. There would be a status quo for a while in this quarter, but Canalys expects growth of eight percent by 2025. The mid-sized segment plays an important role in this growth, with an increase of nine percent.

A small note on Canalys’ analysis: the forecasts focus on the American market. In general, relations in Europe are not shockingly different from those on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean.

Update Windows

Canalys sees two reasons why the PC industry still has at least a year and a half to go. As you may have heard, commercial support for Windows 10 ends in October 2025. Now the impact of that looming deadline is limited even sooner, but next year could see a rush on new PCs. Business Windows users still have the option to extend support for three years for a fee.

What about AI?

A second development in the PC industry is AI. The first batch of Copilot Plus PCs with Qualcomm X chips were released this month. Although after reviewing the Surface 7 laptops, we conclude that the AI ​​features offer limited value for now, Canalys believes the hype will certainly trickle down to the PC industry as well.

So the near future looks good for PC manufacturers. After the Corona boom in 2020 and 2021, the industry experienced a few more difficult years in which sales again fell sharply quarter after quarter. A new impetus was urgently needed and with the help of Microsoft it came.
