Huawei begins to close its stores in Russia – media

Chinese smartphone maker Huawei has started closing its branded stores in Russia due to sanctions against Russia for invading Ukraine.

It was noted that Huawei has closed four of the 19 official points and that the shutdown will continue in the coming months.

On April 9, Huawei removed applications from sanctioned Russian banks from the AppGallery store – VTB, FC Otkrytie and Promsvyazbank, on April 12, the manufacturer turned off support for Mir cards in AppGallery.

On May 6, The Wall Street Journal reported, citing sources, that some major Chinese tech companies had left the Russian market without making official statements. Lenovo and Xiaomi were among the companies that cut off the supply to Russia. In late March, the Financial Times reported that Huawei could face new sanctions from the United States if it continues to support Russia in telecoms. US Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo also said the US could punish Chinese companies that help Russia.

Yale University says more than 1,000 companies have left the Russian market since Russia invaded Ukraine.

As reported, Russian President Putin on February 24 announced a full-scale invasion of Ukraine, including from Belarusian territory. Martial law was declared in Ukraine and general mobilization was declared. The country is pushing back the invaders.

After the start of the war, Russia was subjected to extensive sanctions by the world community.
