The Utica Police Department in New York has released body camera footage showing an officer fatally shooting a child after he ran away from them and picked up what the officer believed was a gun.
An officer was seen performing chest compressions on a young man after he was shot on Friday, June 28.
Reuters confirmed that the video matches events being investigated since this weekend.
The teenager was identified as Nya Mwei13 years old, Utica police said on their Facebook page.
According to US media, Naya’s family are refugees belonging to an ethnic group from Myanmar.
Utica Police Chief Mark Williams said at a news conference that the boy’s gun was identified as replica Glock 17 pistol. with a detachable magazine that he described as a shotgun.
Utica police said in a statement that the two investigations are ongoing and hope that an “impartial, fair and thorough investigative process” will answer any remaining questions.
