According to Moscow, today the SCO, together with the BRICS group, are the pillars of the “new world order.”

In May, Russia announced that Xi Jinping and Putin would meet in Kazakhstan during the SCO summit, which would be their second meeting in about two months, following the Russian leader’s visit to China in mid-May.

Meanwhile, the meeting between Putin and Erdogan will be the first meeting between the leaders since the talks they held in the Russian resort of Sochi in September 2023.

At the end of 2023, Putin was reported to be planning to visit Turkey, a country the Kremlin leader last visited in January 2020, but this did not happen.

The SCO, created in 2001, currently includes China, India, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, and Belarus is expected to become its tenth member at this summit.

Since 2010, Minsk has been participating in the activities of the SCO as a dialogue partner, and since 2015 as an observer.

Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko said days before the Astana summit that SCO membership was “very important” for his country, and he assured that Belarus had “fulfilled all the requirements” to become a member.
