Putin Believes He Is in Harmony with Xi Jinping, Erdogan During Meeting in Kazakhstan

President of Russia, Vladimir Putinmet with the Chinese leader in Astana this Wednesday Xi Jinpingand what about Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdoganto demonstrate its harmony with old partners and friends, despite the war with Ukraine and tensions in relations with the West.

Russian-Chinese interaction “In world affairs, this is one of the main stabilizing factors in the international arena,” the Russian president said during a meeting with his Chinese counterpart on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit.

Second meeting in two months

This is the second meeting between Putin and Xi Jinping in less than two months, following their meeting in China in mid-May, the Russian leader’s first foreign trip since his re-election to a fifth term.

The two leaders also plan to meet again in person next October during the BRICS leaders’ summit in the Russian city of Kazan.

And, in Moscow’s view, today the SCO and the BRICS group are the pillars of a “new world order” that should counteract Western influence.

Before the meeting in Astana, the Kremlin assured that Russia and China are cooperating in all areas, “including sensitive ones.”

Commercial exchange between Moscow and Beijing has exceeded $200 billion, Russian presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov reported.

Ukraine in the spotlight

During a face-to-face meeting in China, the two presidents demonstrated consensus on global issues such as the conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza, multipolarity and trade, while putting their distance from Western positions.

Xi Jinping and Putin then stressed that “a political solution to the ‘crisis’ in Ukraine is the right direction” and “the extreme urgency of finding a way out of the situation in Palestine.”

Also today Putin assured that relations with China is experiencing the ‘best period in its history’ while insisting that bilateral cooperation is “not directed against anyone” and that Moscow and Beijing are not creating “blocs or alliances.”

The two leaders spoke again about Ukraine today and agreed that discussions on a way out of the crisis without Russia’s participation cannot be successful, according to a Kremlin spokesman.

This was Beijing’s argument for not sending a representative to the peace conference in Switzerland, which was held at the request of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Visit to Turkey

Another of Putin’s meetings that received a lot of media attention today was the meeting with Erdogan, whom the Kremlin leader had planned to meet at the beginning of the year as part of his visit to Turkey, which has not yet taken place.

The Turkish President called on Putin to visit Turkey “as soon as possible”, a proposal to which the Russian leader responded affirmatively.

On the other hand, the Turkish President welcomed the development of bilateral relations despite the “difficulties of the moment.”

“We have seen a slight decrease in the volume of trade in recent months, but it remains at a fairly high level – 55 billion, if calculated in dollars,” Putin noted.

Putin also touched on Russian-Turkish cooperation in the field of tourism and recalled that last year alone, about 7 million Russians visited Turkey.

Erdogan, for his part, said the goal now is to bring bilateral trade turnover to $100 billion.

During today’s meeting, the Russian leader also met with the leaders of Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Mongolia and Pakistan.

Meanwhile, on the sidelines of the summit tomorrow, Putin plans to hold a brief meeting with Acting Iranian President Mohammad Mokhber, whose country became a member of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization in July 2023.

The SCO, created in 2001, currently includes China, India, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. Belarus is expected to become its 10th member at the summit.
