Japan to stop using floppy disks in government institutions

It seems Japan has finally conquered the floppy disk. The country’s digital agency announced that it has lifted the legal regulations that prevented it from getting rid of the outdated data carrier. There are no less than 1,034 different regulations governing the use of floppy disks. There was only one exception, concerning ecology and disposal.

We won the floppy disk war on June 28! Minister of Digital Technologies Taro Kono

The digital agency was founded during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2021, when efforts to launch a nationwide testing and vaccination program revealed that the government was still relying on paper records and outdated technology. At the time, around 2,000 government agencies were using floppy disks, not out of their own whim, but because they were required by various legal norms. Kono later announced that he would work to rid himself of this anachronism, now taking his fight to its logical conclusion.

It was not stated how long it would take for the state apparatus to abandon floppy disks completely.
