The World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC) is scheduled to be held in Shanghai from July 4-7, 2024. This year’s theme is “Managing AI for Good and for All,” and the event will be held in a large 52,000-square-meter exhibition area.
One of the most anticipated moments of the conference was Tesla CEO Elon Musk’s appearance on stage. Musk is expected to give a speech at the opening ceremony, but it’s not yet clear whether he’ll attend in person or via video. Musk has previously attended WAIC in person in 2019 and via video addresses in 2021 and 2022.
Musk’s recent visit to China, where he met with Chinese Premier Li Qiang in Beijing in April 2024, adds further significance to his attendance at the conference. During that visit, they discussed Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) software and data permissions. Premier Li Qiang is also scheduled to speak at WAIC.
Tesla will be heavily represented at the conference showcasing its innovative products. The Cybertruck will be unveiled alongside Tesla’s latest-generation humanoid robot, the Optimus Gen 2. This advanced robot has its own actuators and sensors, a 2-DoF neck, and a 30% faster walking speed than its predecessor. Two Optimus robots are already autonomously performing tasks in Tesla factories.
Musk’s WAIC speech comes as the European Union imposes preliminary tariffs on electric vehicle (EV) imports from China. Tesla, the largest exporter of electric cars from China to Europe, is facing an additional 21% tax. The company has requested a separate tax rate from the Commission.
WAIC will bring together leading scientists, industry leaders, and government officials to discuss advances in AI, robotics, autonomous systems, large-scale models, computing power, and AI+ programs. At the 2023 conference, Musk praised China’s rapid progress in AI and highlighted the transformative potential of AI and autonomous driving technologies.
Thanks to Musk’s participation and Tesla’s innovative presentations, the World Artificial Intelligence Conference in Shanghai promises to be an exciting and long-awaited event.
