Bitcoin falls to two-month low

Bitcoin fell to a two-month low amid uncertainty surrounding the U.S. presidential election and reports of an outflow of bitcoin from Tokyo crypto exchange Mt. Gox, which went bankrupt in 2014.

The world’s largest cryptocurrency fell to a two-month low on Thursday, extending a slide that began a month ago. Bitcoin fell more than 2% to $57,843, its lowest level since May 2. The cryptocurrency has lost more than 6% of its value this week, Reuters reported.

Experts say that the Bitcoin rate is affected by fears about the possibility of replacing Joe Biden as the Democratic Party candidate for the US presidency. “If Biden is replaced, and there is a lot of talk about it right now, the new candidate may not be as supportive of cryptocurrencies,” said Josh Gilbert, an analyst at the international social trading platform eToro.

Despite starting the year off strong with the launch of exchange-traded funds (ETFs) in the U.S. and reaching a record high of $73,803.25 in mid-March, the leading cryptocurrency is now down more than 21% from its peak.

Analysts also noted that Mt. Gox, once the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange before going bankrupt in 2014, has started paying off its creditors. If lenders start selling the tokens they received in bulk, that could affect Bitcoin’s price.

“It is expected that some of the original buyers of Bitcoin will start selling their holdings, which is a pretty significant part of the market,” noted Tony Sycamore, market analyst at IG. “But he added that despite the current situation, Bitcoin could retest the March highs and possibly rally to $80,000.”

Amid the general decline in the cryptocurrency market, Ethereum, the second-largest cryptocurrency, was also down more than 1% to $3,213, losing more than 22% from its March peak.
