Two Windows 11 virtual machines are no longer working properly. Microsoft will temporarily put them online starting July 15.
Microsoft offers four free virtualization options for Windows 11. On the official page where you can download the virtual machines, Microsoft announces that two packages will be temporarily unavailable starting July 15. These include Parallels to run Windows 11 on macOS and a VM for VMware.
Microsoft cites technical problems as an explanation, without going into detail. The omission of the monthly update in June could have been a sign of things to come. The May update already caused difficulties installing Parallels on ARM-based Macs. It is not entirely clear what the problems with the VMWare VMs are.
15th of July
For now, you can still download and install the VMs in question, but it is not advisable to do so now. After July 15, Windows 11 will bombard you with activation prompts while you will no longer be able to activate the Windows development environment. It is better to wait until Microsoft fixes the issues or use a different virtualization package temporarily.
The other two VMs, Hyper-V and VirtualBox, remain available. A Windows 11 VM contains the Enterprise version of the operating system and a toolbox for developing Windows applications.
