AMD could have gone bankrupt anyway, but PlayStation saved it. Renato Fragale, president of AMD’s client gaming PC division, explained how the PS4’s excellent sales helped AMD avoid bankruptcy.

The global financial crisis of 2008 hit AMD hard. At the time, the company was far from the financial performance it can boast about now; it was forced to sell some of its intellectual property, including the one that allowed Qualcomm to create its own Adreno GPUs (Adreno is an anagram of Radeon). And then analysts predicted that AMD would go bankrupt by 2020.

However, in 2013, the Sony PS4 game console was released, which initially showed excellent sales and then only increased momentum. According to Fragali, it was the success of the PS4 that allowed AMD to escape bankruptcy. We will remind you that the last generation Sony console, unlike the PS3, was based on a semi-custom AMD APU. Similar processors were used in the Xbox One consoles, but their sales were much lower. The current generation consoles from Sony and Microsoft also rely on AMD solutions.

More than 117 million PS4 consoles have been sold to date, making it Sony’s second best-selling console and fifth best-selling console overall.
