HP ends the link between HP+ and laser printers

After problems in the business segment, HP is changing course. All laser printers with the HP+ standard are disappearing from the packaging.

After the introduction of HP+ three years ago, the sales link with laser printers is being discontinued. In return for an additional year of warranty and some additional features such as improved security and remote printing via the HP+ app, the printer only works with original HP ink or toner.

HP+ applies to all compatible printers today, but HP is eliminating certain printers that have HP+ pre-installed as standard at a lower purchase price. You can recognize these printers by the letter “e” at the end of the type number. On the one hand, you have the classic HP Laserjet Pro 4102fdw without HP+ and the HP Laserjet Pro 4102fdwe with HP+.

The most important requirement for continued use of HP+ is that the printer is permanently connected to the Internet. This is often not a problem, except in a business environment. To make data leaks more difficult, printers are often only made available locally.

Reply from HP

HP shared a statement via Printer Channel: “We recognize that some customers in IT-managed office environments may not be able to meet the cloud connectivity requirements for HP+. To provide our customers with an exceptional printing experience in all office environments, we will no longer offer LaserJet series products with HP+.”

“We plan to extend proven solutions such as Print from Anywhere and Smart Security to select new HP LaserJet devices. HP+ customers who are satisfied with their devices and service can continue to use their devices as before. They do not need to make any adjustments.”

What about all the HP+ laser printers sold?

The deletion of HP+-specific models only applies to laser printers. Inkjet printers with the letter “e” on the back remain available in stores at a lower price than the version without the HP+ standard on board. The reason for this is that inkjet printers are used less frequently in large corporate environments, so the problem of permanent online connectivity does not arise.

Anyone who owns such a laser printer with HP+ today can continue to use it. However, HP does not provide any firmware updates, with the exception of all printer models with the letter “e”. The printers will no longer receive any updates at all. The printer will continue to work with all the functions it has today. You will continue to enjoy all the benefits that HP+ offers, such as the additional warranty.

HP+ will remain optionally available for all compatible printers, including all benefits in exchange for using original HP ink. HP+ will not disappear, but the connection to the printer will disappear.
